The chief executive of Heart of Kent Hospice has said PPE only arrives once a 'critical crisis point' is reached.
The Heart of Kent Hospice - with more than 20 nursing staff and assistants and capacity for up to ten in-patients - goes through about 150 aprons, pairs of gloves and masks a day.Carers are no longer able to provide some of the little comforts to patients that they normally give such as hand massages.
To make things a little less alien, a patient is given photographs of the people who are caring for them so they know what each person looks like behind the mask. The hospice has created a new family liaison role, with a nursing assistant each day focusing on ways to keep a patient connected with his or her family.
