Convenience stores should keep on selling Easter eggs during the coronavirus lockdown and ignore 'overzealous' attempts to stop them, a trade body has said

Convenience stores should keep on selling Easter eggs during the coronavirus lockdown and ignore"overzealous" attempts to stop them, a trade body has said.

The Association of Convenience Stores accused council officials of"misreading" the rules as Britain deals with theThey have tried to tell independent shops what they can and cannot sell, including items such as chocolate eggs and hot-cross buns, said the ACS.Its chief executive, James Lowman, said:"The government have defined which stores can remain open, and that includes convenience stores including newsagents and off-licences.

"There is no government definition of which products can be sold within those stores. This is overzealous enforcement and a misreading of the rules."Rather than help limit human contact, the actions of the officials concerned have had the opposite effect, Mr Lowman added. He said the attempts had"brought confusion, distracted retailers in the busiest weeks of their lives, and increased the interactions between people at a time when the government is trying to minimise them".
