BREAKING: Coronavirus death toll 20% higher than NHS figures, new data suggests
They differ from those reported by the government and NHS in England and Wales because of different reporting methods and timings. The ONS figures are based on deaths registered in a given week, whereas the official toll is based on deaths occurring among hospital patients in a given week.London
The expected spike comes after Monday marked the first time the daily increase in deaths had fallen for two days straight.Figures were recorded as dropping from 209 on Sunday and 260 on Saturday, the worst rise in deaths so far in the UK. Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College London said the rate of hospital admissions suggests social distancing guidance is making a difference.
He told the BBC on Monday: ‘In the UK we can see some early signs of slowing in some indicators – less so deaths because deaths are lagged by a long time from when measures come in force.
