Writing to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, UK Hospitality said the sector is facing an ‘existential threat’ unless laws are changed
A ‘significant number of jobs’ in the UK service industry are in danger unless the Government steps-in to soften the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, a trade group has warned., UK Hospitality said the sector is facing an ‘existential threat’ unless laws are changed to allow temporary staff redundancies. The group’s head Kate Nicholls said some of the biggest hotel chains, pubs and restaurants might not survive for much longer due to the economic impact of the Covid-19 outbreak.
In a letter seen by the BBC, she said: ‘This is business-critical – these are cash businesses, put simply, if you don’t have people coming through the door, you will run out of cash very quickly. ‘This is affecting hospitality companies of all sizes and shapes…it’s high street businesses that are seeing footfall decline, so your pubs, bars, your cafes where you pop in for a sandwich, but also it’s the larger companies across the sector – they are the firms that employing the most people.’Not many people were out today in the usually busy Cabot Circus, Bristol
She called for an intervention to keep firms afloat in the next six to eight weeks, warning many will crash by May without help from the Government.
