'The simple truth is none of us knew what was going on': Passengers and staff on the Grand Princess cruise ship were caught by surprise when they were diverted back to California to await test results of some on board for the new coronavirus
SAN FRANCISCO—The Grand Princess cruise ship was headed to Ensenada, Mexico, after visiting Hawaii when the word came down to passengers: The 951-foot vessel was diverting immediately to its home port here due to “unexpected events.”
Only later did passengers find out what was really happening, through news reports and texts and phone calls with family and friends. A man on the cruise ship’s previous voyage, to Mexico, had died from exposure to the novel coronavirus, and dozens of passengers from that trip were still on board.
