The number of people to have died with coronavirus in England and Wales, up to 8 May, was almost 40,000, official figures show.
Weekly deaths in England and Wales in the week ending 8 May were 12,657 - a decrease for the third week running, but 3,081 more than the five-year average for the 19th week of the year, Sky's economics editor Ed Conway said.
Of those, 3,930 had COVID-19 mentioned on their death certificate, making up 31.1% of all deaths - a decrease of 2,105 deaths compared with the week before. The number of deaths in care homes from all causes for the week up to 8 May decreased from 6,409 to 4,248.Deaths related to coronavirus in care homes fell for the second week running to 1,666 in that week, from 2,423 deaths in the previous seven days - a decrease of 31%.
However, those deaths involving COVID-19 as a percentage of all deaths in care homes rose to 39.2% compared with 37.8% the week before.
