Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust receives mixed results from CQC inspection, showing improvements in safety and leadership but requiring further action in urgent and emergency care.

Inspections carried out by the Care Quality Commission ( CQC ) in May and June revealed that improvements are still needed at a hospital trust providing care in Cornwall . The CQC rerated urgent and emergency care at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) as 'requires improvement' following the inspections. The inspections were prompted by concerns regarding waiting times and the number of falls among older patients on a specific ward, as reported by the watchdog.

Delays stemming from overcrowding were identified as a key issue. While the trust received a 'good' rating in the caring and well-led categories, it saw an improvement from 'requires improvement' to 'good' in the safe category, according to the watchdog. Catherine Campbell, CQC's deputy director of operations in the south, stated that inspectors observed individuals who were fit for discharge remaining in the hospital longer than necessary due to a lack of readiness in their external care arrangements. She emphasized that despite the challenges, staff were diligently working to provide safe care.Inspectors noted that a mental health assessment room required updating as it did not adhere to national guidelines. Staff expressed concerns about the pressure they were facing and its potential impact on the quality of care. However, the department had implemented adaptations for individuals with learning disabilities to minimize any potential distress. The service now possessed adequate staffing with the appropriate qualifications, training, and experience to ensure patient safety. There was also positive engagement with external partners. Campbell acknowledged the reassuring improvements in certain ratings while recognizing the need for further progress. The trust asserted that a 'great deal' had been accomplished to enhance urgent and emergency care since the inspections, despite ongoing 'challenging circumstances'. Since September, community-based staff have been stationed in the emergency department and other wards, enabling community nurses to collaborate with hospital colleagues in assessing patients and facilitating quicker discharges
