Should I remove my car's underbody shields? — via drivingdotca Troubleshooter Maintenance

I can attest to one weather benefit of an under-engine shield. When driving in deep powder-like snow, a properly placed shield can stop the engine drive belts from sucking snow onto their pulleys, which in rare cases can cause a belt to pop off, leaving the vehicle inoperative. If you’re not the type to try your hand at ski-slope climbs or drives down unmaintained roads like I have, you can probably cross this one off your have-to-have list.

The best temporary repair can be made with zip ties, even though you might have to create a few new holes on the broken panel to use them. Tape is not likely to last beyond the first stop sign, as these shields tend to get covered with grease and road oils that leave a poor surface for adhesives to bond to.Article content
