Momodou Taal, a Black international doctoral student at Cornell University, could be deported after being suspended for participating in pro-Palestinian protests. Taal, who teaches a course called 'What Is Blackness?', was initially suspended for taking part in a pro-Palestinian encampment and later for joining a protest against defense contractors Boeing and L3Harris at a campus career fair. He denies wrongdoing and alleges he has been targeted due to his race and religion.

Cornell University student Momodou Taal fears he may have to leave the U.S. following his involvement in a pro-Palestinian demonstration last month. Taal, an international doctoral student from the United Kingdom, teaches a course called “What Is Blackness?” at Cornell and has been active in pro-Palestinian advocacy on campus.

Taal alleges that he has been targeted because he is Black and Muslim. The university’s interim president, Michael Kotlikoff, has denied any targeting. In a statement Monday, Kotlikoff said that nearly 20 participants in the career fair protest had been identfied and added: Taal has been granted two shots at appeal. The first — to Cornell’s vice president for student and campus life — was denied. The second — to the university provost — is under review.
