Coraline follows Coraline Jones, a lonely young girl who, after moving to a new house with her inattentive parents, discovers a portal to another, more sinister alternate reality behind one of the house's many doors. Written and directed by Henry Selick, the film uses stop-motion animation and stars Dakota Fanning as Coraline. Coraline is a true classic. The fact that it is a stop-motion claymation film is incredible to me because of how visually appealing it looks.
It's one of the best examples of a cult film in recent memory, and 15 years later, there's still plenty worth praising about it.The first of Laika's magical animated catalog, Coraline is a great horror film for young viewers. It speaks to the things that scare them - having no control over their surroundings, not being loved by their parents, and being seen as a weird outcast. There are some scary moments here for adults, too, especially concerning giving oneself button eyes.
