The grassroots community group has come out against using public dollars for a planned sports and entertainment district anchored by a Spurs arena.

A prominent grassroots community group has come out against using any city dollars to pay for a new downtown home court for the Spurs — or to create an ambitious, multibillion dollar sports and entertainment district surrounding the arena.

Metro leaders don’t want city or Bexar County funds spent on any component of the project. “COPS and Metro Alliance, since its inception, has stood by this very, very fundamental belief that we are not in favor of using public tax dollars for private benefit, especially private benefit for just a few,” said Rev. Jimmy Drennan of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church on the Southeast Side.

Metro event on Dec. 8 where group leaders shared their opposition to Project Marvel before more than 1,100 members, as well as City Manager Erik Walsh and Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai.
