The Copper River dip net salmon fishery will open next Thursday closing on Sunday, June 16.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game has announced the schedule for the famed Copper River personal use dip net fishery. It will open on June 13 .
Each year, Alaskans from around the state head down to the Copper River to catch their share of salmon. One appealing aspect of this location is the use of dip nets, which means more fish in a shorter period of time. At least, generally speaking that’s the idea. The time do so has been announced, giving residents about one week to gather their gear and get down to the river.
The Chitina subdistrict personal use dip net salmon fishery will open for 72 hours starting at 6 p.m. on June 13 and closing at 6 p.m. on June 16. That is Thursday to Sunday of next week. However, this is a reduction of 96 hours from the preseason schedule. The annual limit is 25 salmon for the head of household with an additional 10 salmon for each dependent of the permit holder. In addition, only one king or chinook salmon may be kept, if captured.
Steelhead cannot be kept and must be returned to the river unharmed and all harvest must be recorded immediately on the permit.
