Lee Ernest Walker, who fatally shot NYPD Officer Angel Andino in 1984 over a pair of sunglasses, was released on parole after serving 40 years. This decision has sparked outrage among law enforcement officials and the officer's family.
A cop killer who fatally shot an NYPD officer over a pair of trendy sunglasses was released from prison on Tuesday, devastating the officer's family, The Post has learned. Lee Ernest Walker, 67, was paroled from Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining after serving 40 years for first-degree murder. The release comes after Walker shot and killed Officer Angel Andino on June 15, 1984, during a struggle over a pair of $140 Cazal sunglasses.
Andino, a young officer, had stopped Walker to question him about the theft. During the struggle at Eye Encounter Inc. in the 40 Precinct, Walker managed to snatch Andino's gun. Although Andino managed to knock the weapon from Walker's grasp, he was subsequently pushed to the ground and shot twice in the face and head. The tragic incident left Andino's family and the entire NYPD community reeling. His brother, who was also a police officer, was in the neighborhood at the time and rushed to the hospital when he received the news. The release of Walker has sparked outrage among law enforcement officials and the officer's family. Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), criticized the parole board, accusing it of harboring pro-criminal activists who prioritize the release of cop killers over the safety and justice of victims. Hendry stated that the board's emphasis on an inmate's age and prison record, rather than the severity of their crime, is deeply flawed. He further announced that the PBA has subpoenaed the board's voting records to expose any potential bias against law enforcement personnel.
