A very flexible 10-day grocery list for our new very flexible meal plan.

is a plan you can use in multiple ways. You can cook through the master recipes, following them exactly as they’re written. Or you can use our suggested variations to riff on the recipes until you have something that barely resembles the master recipes at all.

That’s the whole point of Cooking Through It: to provide maximum flexibility in a moment when uncertainty reigns. So how do you write a shopping list for such a flexible set of recipes? Well, you don’t. The grocery list below reflects the ingredients needed to cook the master recipes as they’re written, without much riffing. If you’re an omnivore and can get everything on this list, great—you’re ready to start cooking.

But right now, most of us want to cook from what’s already in our house, and/or are limited to what we can find at the grocery store. If that’s the case for you, use this list as a very loose guide. When you see a can of tuna, assume you can use a can of mackerel or sardines instead; where you see chicken legs, assume you can swap in a similar amount of thighs.

All of the swaps and variations are listed on the main meal plan. There you can also find ways to make the entire plan vegetarian. Ultimately every shopping list for Cooking Through It will be different, so make the grocery list that makes sense for you, and use the list below to help.
