A new study explores the effectiveness of conversational swarm intelligence (CSI) as a tool for large-scale brainstorming and prioritization. Utilizing the Thinkscape platform, researchers found that participants preferred CSI, reporting greater collaboration, productivity, and satisfaction with outcomes.

In 2023, a next-generation technology known as conversational swarm intelligence (CSI) emerged by blending the principles of artificial swarm intelligence (ASI) with the capabilities of large language models (LLMs). ASI, developed in 2014, empowers networked groups of people to make collaborative decisions by utilizing systems modeled after biological swarms.

CSI takes this concept further by integrating the power of LLMs to enhance communication and idea generation within these virtual swarms. \A recent study explored the use of a CSI platform called Thinkscape for real-time brainstorming and prioritization among networked users. Researchers employed a variation of the alternative use task (AUT), a common brainstorming technique, comparing brainstorming using the CSI platform to a traditional text-chat environment. \The findings revealed that participants significantly favored the CSI platform, reporting a greater sense of collaboration, productivity, and the generation of high-quality ideas. Over 80% of participants felt more heard and expressed increased ownership and buy-in for the outcomes generated through CSI deliberations compared to the traditional chat environment. \ Ganesh Mani, Professor of Innovation Practice and Director of Collaborative AI at Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business, and co-author of the study, emphasizes the potential of CSI: 'Overall, our results suggest that CSI is a promising GenAI-based method for brainstorming and prioritizing on a large scale.' Further research is proposed to investigate CSI's effectiveness in facilitating brainstorming and prioritization among even larger groups, potentially involving hundreds or thousands of participants simultaneously. \This study builds upon a 2024 research project that demonstrated CSI's ability to enhance collective intelligence in groups. In that study, using the Thinkscape platform, groups of 35 randomly selected participants answered IQ test questions collectively, achieving an average effective IQ of 128, placing them in the 97th percentile. Louis Rosenberg, Chief Scientist of Unanimous AI and co-author of the study, highlights the combined significance of both studies: 'Taken together, these two studies suggest CSI could have a very positive impact on how enterprise teams collaborate in the future.' \Christopher Dishop, Post-Doctoral Fellow of Organizational Behavior and Theory at Carnegie Mellon's Tepper School of Business, emphasizes the potential implications for large organizations: 'The average Fortune 1000 company has more than 30,000 employees, so the ability to engage large groups in real-time discussions, brainstorms, evaluations, debates, assessments, and prioritizations could be a powerful collaborative way to solve problems, plan projects, forecast outcomes, assess risks, capture employee feedback, and encourage the cross-pollination of ideas across large companies.
