A man named Patrick Hearn has been charged with malicious destruction after allegedly cutting the liner, but his attorneys argue he is being scapegoated for the botched renovation.
At least three others face misdemeanor charges for removing paint samples. The case has been criticized as an abuse of prosecutorial power. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that after cleaning debris from Independence Day fireworks, the plan is to repair any vandalism and refill the pool.
