Opponents to the proposal said plastered signs around the small town of Darrington stating “hell no to grizzlies.” They told KOMO News it would be too dangerous for people, livestock and salmon. “I’m from Idaho, they had plenty and I’ve also lived in Montana, and I’ve met up with one. You don’t want to meet up with one,” said a man in Darrington who wanted to remain anonymous. “How about the elk and the deer? We got enough cats in this vicinity now that’s taking the game out. We don’t need anything else that’s taking the game out.”“A lot of us are hikers here and we don’t want grizzly bears on our trails,” added David Lenon of Darrington.
“Under this 10-J rule in certain circumstances we could preemptively move a bear that poses a threat to human safety,” stated Andrew Lavalle with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “Agencies are proposing an initial population of 25 bears over a five to 10-year period in an area the size of New Jersey.”“It’s going to be up in the wilderness. It’s not going to be down here close to anybody, and besides that, they’re going to run away anyway when they hear you,” said Jan Mabee of Darrington.
