A proposed mega-development that aims to build 45,000 new homes across 9,000 acres in Fresno, Calif., will go before the Fresno City Council for approval later this fall.
Similar to controversial Solano County proposal, Fresno’s plan would convert a rural swath of land into a walkable neighborhoods, where residents could get to a town center, elementary school, recreation area, community garden and local shops all by foot.
The proposal also mentions planting school gardens within the neighborhood’s schools, integrating community orchards into SEDA’s public open spaces and developing a “Fresno Grown” brand for locally-grown produce.According to the local news site, Sanger West — the first of the 16 new schools SEDA needs — requires all of the financial resources Sanger Unified has, and the state school bonds that local schools relied on 40 years ago to build new facilities have dried up.
Fresno officials have said the development — called the Southeast Development Area — would create as many as 37,000 jobs, though critics have warned that the expansion would call for 16 new schools that would cost $1 billion.The school is set to open to 1,200 students for the 2025 school year, though it’s already facing a big question about how it will receive water and sewer services due to its far-out location.
Another proposal included building a entirely new, temporary support infrastructure site near the school, the outlet reported, though the request was denied by the Fresno County Planning Commission.
