State authorities are continuing their efforts to mitigate the invasive plant species, Phragmites , in the Great Salt Lake . The drone footage, captured April 4, shows a prescribed burn that was set near the south arm of the Great Salt Lake at Ogden Bay.

The main purpose of this burn was to destroy Phragmites affecting the area. Officials of Utah's Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands defined Phragmites, also known as the Common Reed, as "an invasive grass-like plant that has taken over North American wetlands." This species poses multiple environmental threats, including the conversion of native wetland and wildlife habitats into fire-prone areas, and the decrease in migratory bird habitats, as well as significant impacts on access to recreation and rescue.Members of FFSL said that 23,000 acres of the Great Salt Lake were covered by Phragmites in 2011. By 2024, over 15,600 acres had been treated and controlled. Methods of Phragmites control include herbicide spraying, mowing or trampling, prescribes fires, livestock grazing, water control, and re-vegetation. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the recent burn at Ogden Bay did not meet the set objectives. Ignition is scheduled to resume the following week.
