A contract worker on Friday was killed on the job of a highway construction project around milepost 80 of the Seward Highway, according to state officials.

In a press release, the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities wrote that the person was killed during bridge removal at the Twentymile River, which flows under the Seward Highway just before it rounds the end of Turnagain Arm.The Seward Highway MP 75-90 Rehabilitation Project will widen and realign the roadway and replace 15 bridges, according to Shannon & Wilson. The Seattle-based consulting firm wrote the work is geared toward protecting the infrastructure against earthquakes.
