Seniors displaced after Yarmouth fire | SaltWire #fire #yarmouth #seniors #newsNegotiations on a first collective bargaining agreement for Java Blend employees in Halifax will begin within four weeks.
“The moment that decision came out … it was very clear that we were very close to winning. I believe the employer knew that instantly, as well. We got communications starting on Saturday and then into Sunday night about preparations for a settlement.” “When we formed our union a year ago, we knew how many people were in the workplace. There were between 30 and 40 people in the bargaining unit,” Oh said. “Since that time, in addition to the nine terminations, there have been even more people that have exited the workplace, I think because people were really bothered by the employer’s actions, they saw their co-workers get terminated in the workplace, and some found better opportunities elsewhere.
Oh said while wages will naturally be among the issues negotiated, the workers are just as interested in health and safety concerns, job security and an end to capricious changes in work schedules. “I know, going into this, they’re going to say they don’t have enough money, that they’re not able to give any leeway on any monetary items,” she said. “The reality is, monetary items are only a part of bargaining.”
