Contactless card limit will rise to £45 from £30 next week to limit physical contact in fight to stop spread of coronavirus
This is to try and help people to limit physical contact to fight off the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.The limit is rising to £45, from £30, for contactless paymentsFrom Wednesday 1 April, some shops will begin letting people spend up to £45 with a tap of their contactless card.
It will be rolled out across the UK but some shops may take longer to implement the new limit such as retailers including supermarkets which are currently operating at peak capacity.This is to reduce the need for physical contact by shoppers entering their pin numbers on card machines.
“Some shops will take longer to make the necessary changes, given the strain they’re under. In the meantime, most customers can continue to make contactless payments for higher amounts using their smart phone.”Contactless payments were first introduced in 2007 and at the time shoppers were allowed to spend £10 in one transaction.Lots of retailers have now shut their branches temporarily because of the coronavirus outbreak.
They remain open online but shoppers won’t be able to go into branches of shops including; John Lewis, Ikea, and Debenhams.Restaurants, bars, and cafes were told on Friday they needed to shut down, but they are still allowed to sell takeaway food.Get the latest coronavirus news, facts and figures from around the world - plus essential advice for you and your family.
