Phase two of the Richardson Highway mile 359 overpass is underway and scheduled for completion this fall.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - This summer the Alaska Dept. of Transportation is working on phase two of the Richardson Highway mile 359 overpass and they hope to complete all parts of the project before winter rolls in.
, one of the biggest projects will be seeing completion this year. In 2023, the DOT began building an overpass at mile 359 of the Richardson Highway near the South Cushman business access exit. This overpass is meant to improve traffic flow and reduce the possibility of accidents by moving automobiles over a train track crossing. It also serves to connect pedestrians to Badger Road from Fairbanks and allow soldiers to access the“Last year on the Richardson 359 project, we got the north bound lanes completed over the railroad tracks as well as the first part of the troop underpass tunnel,” said John Perreault, a public information officer with the Alaska DOT. Phase two of this project is well underway as some of the south bound construction began last season in addition to completing the north bound overpass. “This year we are completing the south bound lanes which are going up pretty quickly considering the work we got started last year,” Perreault said. A slight difference in design is also supporting the speed of construction. “The design of the southbound lanes allows us to have an embankment, so we have fewer of the precast concrete panels to set in place before we can bring in dirt to raise the roadway up,” explained Perreault. For foot traffic and cyclists, a significant portion of the bike path is being built this year as well. This bike path will also be part of the overpass and “there will be a separated bike path on the north bound lanes on the north side,” said Perreault. In order to complete that path there will be a temporary road closure in the coming weeks. That closure will be on Saturday, July 13. “We will have an upcoming closure in order to set a pedestrian bridge over a waterway near the badger entrance to the Richardson Highway on the inbound lanes to Fairbanks,” Perreault said. There will be a detour put in place during the closure. The overpass, bike path, and the troop underpass tunnel should all be completed by the end of October. Once it is all complete, people going between Fairbanks and North Pole should be able to do so quicker and with more options.
