DOT is aiming to bypass railroad crossings on the Richardson Highway by building an overpass between Fairbanks and North Pole.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In an effort to increase safety and decrease congestion, the Department of Transportation is building a pair of bridges that will pass over a section of railroad tracks on the Richardson Highway.

Congestion on the Richardson Highway has become a problem for people travelling between Fairbanks and North Pole. To improve traffic flow, the DOT is building a pair of overpasses that will allow automobiles and pedestrians to avoid crossing the railroad tracks.

The overpass construction is a two stage project. The first half of the project encompasses the construction of the north bound overpass, expected to see completion in 2023. The south bound overpass will be constructed in 2024. Both bridges will be supported by metal pillars where the bridges and railroad intersect. The rest of the bridge will be supported by earthen material and concrete panels.

“This project encompasses about a mile of highway,” Perreault said. This is because the project faces challenges with a narrow right-of-way passage, but also because there are two other projects connect to the overpass. One of those connected projects includes the construction of a completed pedestrian and bike path that will connect Badger Road to the Fairbanks area. The other project includes the construction of an underpass for the military. This underpass will allow soldiers at Ft.

At the end of the 2023 construction season, the north bound overpass should be open for traffic and the south bound lanes will remain open in their current configuration.
