A handful of new and continuing projects will take place around interior Alaska for 2024 with the completion of the Richardson overpass and the Aurora Drive bridge being expected.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The 2024 road construction season holds a similar outlook to many other construction season consisting of new and continuing projects, but the Alaska Dept. of Transportation has prioritized the minimalization of traffic disruption.
On the Richardson Highway the second half of the overpass, located at milepost 359, is slated for completion allowing uninterrupted traffic flow over the train tracks. While this project is underway, traffic will drive over the already completed portion of the overpass. Pushing passed Delta Junction and onto the Alaska Highway, there will be a selection of smaller projects that are part of an agreement between Alaska and the Yukon Territory. “We are working in two different sections of the Alaska Highway between Tok and the border,” said Perreault. These will be rehabilitation projects focused on fixing “a lot of permafrost damage and a lot of frost heaves,” Perreault explained.
Off of College road, a long awaited project is expected to wrap up after delays put a hold on the project last season. “We’re looking to get the Aurora Drive bridge over Noyes Slough finished this year,” said Perreault. Progress on this project was delayed late last season due to a lack of girders which are needed to hold up the bridge. Those girders are now in production and “ looking to lay those in in June and have that project wrapped up in August,” Perreault said.
