Only 343 beds will be ready for use in the $520 million Theater District Living and Learning due to construction delays blamed on wet winter and supply chain
Construction has fallen behind schedule on a $520 million village that’s meant to help UC San Diego meet a crushing demand for housing and classrooms, forcing the school to look for other ways to accommodate students.
But UCSD said that a supply chain problem and an unusually wet winter slowed construction. As a result, only 343 or so students will be able to move in during the start of the fall quarter, all of whom will live in one of the project’s“The other four buildings with the remainder of the student residences are anticipated to open during winter quarter,” UCSD said in a statement to the Union-Tribune.
The university currently has about 43,000 students, almost 15,000 more than it had a decade ago. And enrollment is expected to grow further this fall. But the boom hasn’t tamped down the demand for housing, largely because students find it difficult or impossible to secure affordable living quarters near campus.
