Fred Malek, a conservative fundraiser and former president of Marriott Hotels and Northwest Airlines who also served in two presidential administrations, has died, the American Action Network announced on Monday.

He was 82. Malek co-founded American Action Network, the conservative advocacy group, and previously served as the finance chairman for the Republican Governors Association.“For more than half a century Fred Malek contributed to making America a shining beacon of democracy throughout the world,” Norm Coleman, the group’s chairman, said in a statement. “A man moved by conscience to act on behalf of his fellow man, Fred stood, time and time again, for the values our Founding Fathers envisioned when they created the nation he loved more than life itself.” For the past 40 years, Malek worked with every Republican presidential nominee except Donald Trump, and served as assistant to former Presidents Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush. Although he did not serve in George W. Bush’s administration, Malek co-owned the Texas Rangers with him before he became president. While working in the Nixon administration, Malek was involved in a memo that was seen as a major act of anti-Semitism by the United States government. Malek, who was 34 at the time, was asked to produce a memo that noted the number of Jews working at the Bureau of Labor Statistics because Nixon believed the department was under control of Democratic rivals and what the president called a “Jewish cabal.“ Malek used voter registration lists and identified those with Jewish-sounding surnames to compile a letter to Nixon that came to be known as the “Jew-counting” memo.were demoted as a result of the memo, but Malek denied involvement in the demotions. He later expressed regret for compiling the list.Coleman, the American Action Network chairman, said that Malek “never walked away from a fight that needed to be fought,” whether it be “the battle for the promise of America or the future of the Republican Party.” American Action Network’s president, Dan Conston, also said in a statement that “Fred touched the lives of countless Americans, always driven by his love of country and boundless energy.” “We owe Fred a debt of gratitude and send Marlene and the entire Malek family our deepest sympathies,” Conston said, referring to Malek’s widow. “We will do our best to honor Fred’s vision and live out the dedication he showed for improving our country. May his memory be a blessing.” Gov. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, also praised Malek’s accomplishments, adding that “he made a real and lasting difference across the country.” “Countless governors were elected because of his tireless efforts and the RGA as we know it simply wouldn’t exist without Fred’s hard work and steadfast support,” Ricketts said in a statement. “I am joined by dozens of my fellow governors and former governors in our gratitude for his many years of service.”
