Conor McGregor says he is a bit out of the loop when it comes to news on his next fight. The man McGregor was supposed to fight next, Michael Chandler, was booked for a rematch with Charles Oliveira in the co-main event of UFC 309 in Madison Square Garden on November 16.

That announcement leaves McGregor in limbo. Seemingly frustrated, McGregor recently asked Saudi Arabian boxing power broker Turki Alalshikh if he could somehow intervene to get him back into competition. McGregor spoke to the media at a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship event on Saturday, September 13, in Hollywood, Florida, where the promotion announced its new rights deal with DAZN. McGregor is a part-owner of BKFC, but members of the media had questions for him about his future as a competitor. He seemed to question his inactivity. "I got tested this evening," McGregor said."I got tested today by the Drug Free Sport Agency. I'm the most tested athlete on the roster, by more than twice the amount. I believe I've been tested maybe 13 times—the same number as the seconds it took me to finish Jose Aldo. Thirteen times. And you know, actually, funny enough, Jose Aldo was number two in testing. I think he's been tested six times. So, I've been tested more than twice as much as all these other athletes, yet I struggle to get a date.""You know, I've talked to Sheik Turki and said,"Sheik Turki, can you assist me here?" McGregor admitted."As far as Chandler rematching Oliveira, I'm happy with the date. It's November. Maybe we can still do it after if they're not going to line me up until December, January, February, or one of those dates. Maybe we can still do it. I'm just a bit out of the loop with it. All I can do is carry on doing what I'm doing. I test under the testing administration, and I train daily. That's it. Let's see what happens. Hopefully, it all comes to fruition." McGregor was scheduled to fight Chandler at UFC 302 in June, but the former pulled out due to an injury. That fight has not been rescheduled. Rather than waiting around, Chandler chose to accept one of the options offered to him, and that was to rematch Oliveira, whom he lost to in May 2021.Jake Paul believes the UFC is keeping McGregor out of action to preserve the value of the two remaining fights on his contract as they negotiate their next TV and streaming rights deal. McGregor didn't mention that theory, but other things he said make Paul's assessment sound even more plausible. "I have 2 fights left in my UFC contract," McGregor said."My opponent that I was scheduled to fight has rescheduled another bout. I would love maybe an exemption or maybe a joint partnership; Bare Knuckle-UFC similar to McGregor Sports and Entertainment and Mayweather Promotions. Some sort of agreement where we can get busy. I need to be busy and right now I'm working to get there. So let's see what happens. Like I said, I have 2 fights left on the contract. And it's taking a minute, but you know patience is one of the most important skills a human being can possess, study, learn and implement. And that's where I'm at right now." McGregor asking Alalshikh for help could mean he is looking for someone to help negotiate with the UFC and to fund the"exemption" he mentioned. McGregor seems destined to compete in crossover fights for massive paydays once his current UFC contract ends. He admitted to having a fondness for them during the media session. It is sensible to think he will want to re-sign with the UFC on some level. Still, he will want to maintain unprecedented freedom to participate in other combat sports–similar to the flexibility the Professional Fighters League has allowed Francis Ngannou to have in his agreement with the promotion. Chandler insists he will fight McGregor in 2025, but as we’ve seen, a lot can change in combat sports in a matter of months.
