“His clothes feel extremely current, yet timeless—like they could belong in your closet for years.” See Connor McKnight’s fall 2022 collection and read our full review:
The first piece Brooklyn-based designer Connor McKnight started working on this season was unlike anything he’s done before. Taking inspiration from quilts made by the women of Gee’s Bend, he began experimenting with a quilt of his own; it resulted in a black, floor-length quilt gown made of recycled polar fleece, using the yo-yo quilting technique. That piece, and the concept behind it, ended up becoming his main kickoff point for fall.
In just three seasons, McKnight has done a stellar job at carving out his own identity in a crowded fashion space: His clothes, often tastefully pared-back, offer a whisper of luxury instead of screaming it out loud. While his quilt gown proved to be a bold statement, the rest of his fall offering leaned on his quiet signatures—cool, versatile wardrobe staples that are well-cut and have just enough visual interest.
While the collection is genderless, McKnight particularly excels in reinventing classic menswear codes. His clothes feel extremely current, yet timeless—like they could belong in your closet for years. His signature checkerboard motifs this season were done on handmade wool sweaters, or applied onto dress shirt collars or ties. Given that knitwear is his best-seller, he made sure to offer lots of cozy sweaters. “I have this really close relationship with my knitters, who are all local,” he said.
While pragmatic in feel overall, McKnight said he also wanted to add elegant detailing to his more rugged pieces this season. A black fleece corset with bungee-cord lacing at the back was surprisingly chic—as was the long, mesh dress . A mustard workwear jacket was finished with a sweet, hand-painted floral print, and khaki trench coats had perfect pleating at the back.
