As global lead scientist for freshwater, I work across WWF’s network and with external partners to integrate scientific research into strategies for river conservation and sustainable energy development. My recent research has focused on the economic, financial and environmental dimensions of hydropower development and operation.
Last year, while driving a rental car back to the Atlanta airport, I pulled onto a freeway entrance ramp and promptly hit a wall of red brake lights. After minutes without moving, I knew I was stuck: hemmed in between concrete walls with idling cars both in front and behind.
Well, as two minutes became five and then fifteen, I might have panicked about missing my flight before I began to muse metaphorical. And it just takes one blockage. The entire rest of the path to the airport might have been flowing smoothly. But, behind whatever barrier I was now stuck behind, all that other open road meant nothing. A single blockage was all that mattered. I could not get from point A to point B..
Beyond species, connectivity also matters to the physical form of rivers. Rivers are not just flows of water, they are also flows of sediment as high-energy rivers carry along silt and sand, the products of erosion from across their whole basins. As rivers near the sea, their slope generally flattens, dropping their flow velocity to the point that the water no longer has the energy to carry sediment. The particles of sand and silt drop out and deposit, building up a delta over time.
