A Connecticut teacher is facing disciplinary action after refusing to remove a crucifix from her classroom. The school district claims the display violates federal and state laws requiring public schools to remain neutral in religious matters, while the teacher's legal team argues that her constitutional right to freedom of religion is being violated.

A Connecticut teacher is facing disciplinary action after refusing to remove a crucifix from her classroom. Marisol Arroyo-Castro, a veteran teacher with 32 years of experience in the Connecticut public school system, was suspended without pay for two days after displaying the religious item near her desk. The school district, citing federal and state laws requiring public schools to remain neutral in religious matters, demanded that Arroyo-Castro remove the crucifix.

Arroyo-Castro, who had displayed the crucifix for the past 10 years, was initially asked to either remove the symbol or be charged with insubordination. She briefly hid the crucifix but later returned it to her classroom wall. According to her legal team, Arroyo-Castro's constitutional right to freedom of religion is being violated. Her attorneys argue that the district's actions also infringe upon several other of her constitutional and statutory rights. They have demanded the district immediately reinstate Arroyo-Castro to her full-time position and cease all disciplinary proceedings related to the matter. The district, however, maintains that the issue has been misinterpreted. Superintendent Tony Casper stated that the matter involves the teacher's decision to prominently display a religious symbol in her classroom, violating both federal and state laws requiring public schools to remain neutral in religious matters. He argued that incorporating religion into the classroom violated the rights of students and parents in the district. Casper further claimed that Arroyo-Castro repeatedly refused to address the school's concerns in a manner that respected both her faith and the diverse religious beliefs of students in the classroom.
