Bridgeport Public Schools (BPS) has implemented new guidelines prohibiting federal immigration authorities, including ICE agents, from entering school buildings without prior authorization from the Superintendent. This policy stands in contrast to a recent directive by the Trump administration allowing ICE arrests in 'sensitive areas,' including schools.
A Connecticut school district has issued guidelines stating that federal immigration authorities are prohibited from entering its buildings without prior permission, a policy that contrasts with one issued by the Trump administration. Bridgeport Public Schools (BPS) said in a press release that it is committed to providing a 'safe, welcoming, and inclusive' environment for students and staff members.
The school district outlined a set of guidelines for staff to follow if 'government officials,' including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, arrive at a school or request information about students. \'Federal immigration activities are strictly prohibited on Bridgeport Public Schools property, transportation routes, or during school activities without prior approval from the Superintendent,' the press release stated. 'No ICE agents or government officials can enter school buildings, buses, or attend school events without prior authorization.' BPS also included 'steps' for staff members to take if an ICE agent visits a district building. Employees are instructed to 'secure the premises,' which could involve locking all exterior doors, before meeting an agent at the building's main entrance. BPS employees are advised in the press release not to 'physically intervene' if an ICE agent does not 'comply' with the district's protocols. 'Instead, gather as much information as possible and notify district security supervisors and the Superintendent's office,' the press release reads. \BPS's guidance comes amidst the Trump administration's intensified efforts to combat illegal immigration into the U.S. The guidelines were released a day after Acting U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman issued a directive allowing federal agents to arrest illegal immigrants in 'sensitive areas,' including churches and schools. A Tuesday press release from the Homeland Security Department stated that this move rescinds an order initially made by the Biden administration. 'Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,' a spokesperson said in the press release. 'The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense.' Crisis in the Classroom (CITC) reached out to BPS to inquire about how the Trump administration's directive might impact the district's guidance. The district did not respond prior to the publication of this article. School districts in sanctuary cities across the nation have also shared guidance in recent weeks in anticipation of the Trump administration's actions. Chicago Public Schools informed families in a message Friday that the district will not 'coordinate' with ICE, nor will it share student records with ICE without a court order or parental consent. New York City Public Schools stated to CITC on Tuesday that the district does not permit ICE to enter its schools unless 'absolutely required by law.' Additionally, the district announced various 'training sessions' in a memo to its school principals last month, designed to teach staff how to 'best support' immigrant students and their families
