A Connecticut state representative has introduced a bill that would mandate photo identification for voters, arguing that the right to vote should be protected similarly to other important civic processes. The bill, H.B. No. 5157, was referred to the Joint Committee on Government Administration and Elections. Meanwhile, a U.S. Representative from Texas reintroduced a bill requiring proof of citizenship for federal voting registration.

A Connecticut lawmaker introduced a bill this week that would require residents to present valid photo identification to vote. State Rep. Craig Fishbein, R-Wallingford, submitted H.B. No. 5157 to the Connecticut House of Representatives, which referred it to the Joint Committee on Government Administration and Elections. The required photo identification would need to have the voter’s name and address, according to the bill. In a statement, state Rep.

Fishbein said a right to vote should have the “same level of protection” as processes like boarding a plane or buying alcohol. “It only makes sense - to me at least. You can't rent a car, stay at a hotel, buy alcohol, or board an airplane without photo identification,” he noted. “Those rules and laws are there to ensure the provider that the person is who they say they are. The right to vote should be afforded (at least) that same level of protection.” Here's hoping that all elected officials want to keep fraud out of voting and support this common sense bill,” the lawmaker added. U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, reintroduced a bill in Congress earlier this month that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE, Act would strengthen current laws that allow citizens to vote, according to the congressman. “American elections belong to American citizens, and the public's confidence in those elections is the cornerstone of our republic,” Rep. Roy said in a press release. “We in Congress have a duty to our fellow citizens to provide that confidence and put concrete enforcement in place to ensure that our elections and our sovereignty cannot be hijacked and influenced by foreign nationals who have no business voting in this country,” he continued.
