Congressman Sam Liccardo plans to call for immediate federal aid Monday for the Pacifica Municipal Pier, as the city works to stabilize the structure following severe damage.

Crews are placing large layers of rocks where the pier meets the beach, creating a protective barrier intended to keep the shore and pier from being swept into the ocean. Liccardo is expected to visit the site and push for federal support during a news conference scheduled for noon. The effort comes after cracking in the concrete forced the closure of the pier on June 4.

The City of Pacifica declared a local emergency because of the damage, and the popular Chit Chat Café on the pier was demolished. City officials are conducting emergency work to stabilize the area near the pier, but the structure remains closed indefinitely and requires long-term repairs. Residents say the closure has left a noticeable void in the community.

"It feels really odd. It feels like something is missing. Like a piece of me or something. It's hard to explain," Pacifica resident Jenny Tsang said.

Pier assessment reports dating back to 2022 show the city was aware of growing structural damage. A 2023 report estimated it would cost $19 million to repair the pier, a figure that could now be higher. Liccardo is expected to be joined at the news conference by Pacifica's mayor and city manager. The owner of the demolished café is also expected to speak.

The timeline for reopening the pier remains unclear as officials continue emergency stabilization efforts and seek funding for long-term repairs.
