Congress must act now on the rightsizing bill

IN a budget hearing last Monday, Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman urged Congress to pass the long-delayed National Government Rightsizing Program bill, which, despite being one of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s first priority measures when he took office, has been stuck in legislative limbo for nearly two years. It should be Congress ' first order of business, even before the passage of the budget for next year.

This might raise concerns about government workers losing jobs, and those who do would have to be properly supported so they can make other work arrangements, but as the NGRP is designed, the job losses would be minimized; most of the workforce adjustment would involve shifting workers to different positions. There are other inefficiencies in the government structure beyond the poor organization of the workforce.
