“In the face of such a huge crisis,” said the Rev. Jeanette Repp, “this is something people can do.”

Like so many, the Rev. Jeanette Repp felt helpless watching the scenes of war in Ukraine roll across the television screen over the past several weeks.

“It’s just heartbreaking,” said Repp, who is the rector at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in San Pedro. “It’s tragic. I also feel powerless and wish humanity could move beyond this.”Rabbi Cassi Kail of Temple Beth-El, just a few blocks away from St. Peter’s, has been in touch with several colleagues in Poland and Ukraine, which has a large Jewish population, including many Holocaust survivors.

“There’s an immediate feeling of being compelled to do something to reach out,” Kail said. “The brutality Putin has brought into Ukraine has been overwhelming for everyone.” The question of what the local community could do has come up at recent church board meetings and retreats, Repp said, and it appeared nothing else was being planned locally for community-wide relief aid, though Temple Beth-El and other individual congregations have been taking up funds for medical supplies and other relief. The result: “Bites and Beers for Ukraine,” a gathering to raise money for relief that will take place from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, April 3, on St. Peter’s outdoor patio, 1648 W.

A $25 suggested donation will provide free “heavy” finger foods and non-alcoholic drinks, while beer and wine will be sold at an extra cost. Live jazz will be be part of the gathering., established in 2015 to serve those who are homeless and made up of five nearby religious congregations, including St. Peter’s and Temple Beth-El. The others are First Presbyterian of San Pedro, The Garden Church and San Pedro United Methodist.
