MELAKA: The Kuala Linggi shore is turning into a marine superhighway and is affecting the livelihood of fishermen, says a Melaka exco.

State agriculture, agro-based, entrepreneur development and cooperative committee chairman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee said the presence of large merchant vessels were causing the fishing area to be congested and limiting the current fishing sites.

"The straits of Malacca is already a congested waterway and now there are dozens of vessels close to the Kuala Linggi shoreline," he said after making a surprise visit to the Kuala Linggi shore accompanied by various marine enforcement agencies on Wednesday ."Their fishing nets were also destroyed by larger vessels," he said.

Norhizam said he had informed the matter to the Federal Government to regulate the maritime traffic at the Kuala Linggi coastline. "There should be a buffer zone created for the fishermen, so that the ships keep away from entering the fishermen zones," he added. Norhizam also revealed that two tugboats were involved in illegal"ship-to-ship" transfer while one vessel which had no helmsman, had violated the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.
