Defence Minister Richard Marles has affirmed confidence in United States lawmakers to approve AUKUS legislation, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese prepares to commence talks on the trilateral security pact with President Joe Biden in Washington today.
The security deal, announced in September 2021, has been passed by the Australian and the United Kingdom parliaments but still awaits approval from the US government, whose Congress must sign off on the bill to see the partnership through.

Prime Minister Albanese touched down in Washington about midday on Monday to meet with Mr Biden, in what comes as a significant diplomatic meet for the two countries amidst geopolitical disturbance in the Middle East. “The first pillar of course is our defence relationship, making sure that the AUKUS arrangements are put in place and talking with Congress and Senate about the legislation that is required to turn this vision into a practical reality,” the prime minister said in a video posted to X.“And the third element, comes from compact that President Biden and I signed in Hiroshima earlier. The compact about climate change, clean energy and critical minerals.
