MANILA, Philippines — Tim Cone is well aware that Gilas Pilipinas will have to pass through the proverbial eye in the needle when the national squad faces New Zealand on November 21 in the second window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers at the Mall of Asia Arena.
But as long as they do what they need to do, Cone feels they have a legitimate shot at beating the visitors. For one, Cone said Gilas is motivated to protect its home court, especially as he anticipates thousands of basketball-crazy Filipino fans will come and support the Philippine team.'They're a 22nd-ranked team in the world, that's higher than the Georgia team we played in the ,' Cone said of the Tall Blacks.'I think we got a shot at beating them.
'They're a nation of rugby players, so they know how to play physically. It's part of their culture,' he added.Still, with next week being their first meeting again since July 2022 during the FIBA Asia Cup held in Jakarta, Indonesia, where New Zealand manhandled Gilas, 92-75, Cone feels the current batch of Filipino players are capable of matching the Tall Blacks.'I don't think they've seen a team like the team we're assembling,' shared Cone.
