Magnetic quantum fluid: Extremely fluid in two ways uniheidelberg NaturePhysics

Bose–Einstein condensates are an ideal platform to explore dynamical phenomena emerging in the many-body limit, such as the build-up of long-range coherence, superfluidity or spontaneous symmetry breaking. Here we study the thermalization dynamics of an easy-plane ferromagnet employing a homogeneous one-dimensional spinor Bose gas. We demonstrate the dynamic emergence of effective long-range coherence for the spin field and verify spin-superfluidity by experimentally testing Landau’s criterion.

We reveal the structure of one massive and two massless emerging modes—a consequence of explicit and spontaneous symmetry breaking, respectively. Our experiments allow us to observe the thermalization of an easy-plane ferromagnetic Bose gas. The relevant momentum-resolved observables are in agreement with a thermal prediction obtained from an underlying microscopic model within the Bogoliubov approximation.

Observation of a new type of self-generated current in magnetized plasmas - Nature CommunicationsObservation of a new type of self-generated current in magnetized plasmas - Nature CommunicationsFusion devices like tokamaks require plasma current to generate magnetic field for plasma confinement. Here the authors report an observation of a self-generated anomalous current that contributes up to 30% of the total current in the fusion plasma at KSTAR.

Hometown Alaska: Touring the Alaska Museum of Science and NatureHometown Alaska: Touring the Alaska Museum of Science and NatureMountain View is known for its diverse community and neighborhood values. It is not just the people that make the community what it is, but the institutions they run, many of whom have been around for a significant amount of time: Clark Middle School, Hula Hands, the Boys & Girls Club, the Red Apple, etc. One less-spoken-of institution that has been a gem in Mountain View is the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature. This week on Hometown Alaska host Justin Williams steps inside and takes a tour to see what it's all about.
