I’m Dr Matthew Frank Watto, here with my great friend and America’s primary care physician, Dr Paul Nelson Williams. Paul, are you a concussion expert? Although concussion isn’t super-tricky to diagnose, there are borderline head injuries that I’m not certain are concussions. When the patient has amnesia or is really foggy and dazed after they hit their head, that’s obviously a concussion. Is this something you struggle with?Dr Senter said that a saliva test would be ideal, because then it could be done on the sideline. Some sort of concrete objective diagnostic test would be great, but unfortunately that's not always the case.This was more framed from the position of a primary care doctor, so this is not like the person on the sideline at a sports game. This is usually in primary care when you're seeing somebody within a day or two of the injury. She said that anyone with a head injury who comes in with symptoms — it could be nonspecific: headache, dizziness, they could be more depressed or anxious, or they could be feeling foggy — those could be compatible with a concussion.
