MARTINEZ — A Concord woman was convicted Tuesday of second degree murder in the beating and strangulation of her estranged husband, a crime prosecutors alleged was planned in advance by her and her boyfriend.in the death of Felipe Lopez-Custodio, who was clubbed to death with a piece of scrap wood and strangled with a cord inside his apartment on Jacqueline Way in Concord.
About a week after his January 2022 death, Lopez showed up, pretended to discover his body, and feigned shock, according to authorities.who sought to please those around her and who was powerless to stop her boyfriend, Ismael Alvarez, from killing Lopez-Custodio. In a separate trial last year, Alvarez was convicted of murder. Surveillance footage from outside Alvarez’s apartment showed him and Lopez disposing of clothes and the club in a dumpster.
Because Lopez-Custodio’s body wasn’t discovered for days, those items weren’t recorded. Within hours of the murder, Lopez withdrew money from Lopez-Custodio’s bank account at a liquor store ATM. She later told police she had been avoiding Lopez-Custodio because he had been hanging around a shady character with a teardrop tattoo, but then admitted she made this up.at a local sushi restaurant. She made sure he got to his apartment, then left and returned with Alvarez.
As Lopez-Custodio slept on a couch he was attacked, and fought back, causing Alvarez’s DNA to end up on his fingernails, prosecutors said. Lopez is being held without bail an is next due in court in mid-July. She faces 15 years to life for the murder charge.
