The Cure onstage at Toyota Center in Houston, May 12, 2023.Smith himself was in a cheeky mood Friday night. The band left the stage after 90 minutes of music, prompting some fans to scurry up the aisles and toward the exits. They returned a few minutes later.

"If we'd only do like 15 songs you'd be like, 'What the f***'," Smith said. "To be fair, we’re only halfway through." The show ran almost three hours, spanning the entirety of the group's catalog. Much of the crowd was dressed in black, a moment to relive their goth glory days. Houston fans tend to talk,, during concerts. But this was one of the more respectful crowds I've seen in a long time. They listened. They enjoyed. Some sat and watched, others remained standing the entirety of the show.Smith sounded great, hitting every note and inflection with ease.

"Charlotte Sometimes," a 1981 single, was a welcome surprise."The Walk" and its swirl of synths were pure New Wave nostalgia."A Forest" was a standout moment, building to a crashing finale as Smith sang,"Again and again and again." "This is the last song," Smith said as the band kicked into"Boys Don't Cry." After twice leaving the stage and quickly returning, he was telling the truth. But some in the rapt crowd were likely expecting them to return once again.
