Russian pianist Olga Kern performs with the San Diego Symphony at its season-opening concert on June 28 at the Rady Shell in downtown San Diego. Americans and Russians bumped elbows on the San Diego Symphony’s opening summer concert Friday at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Next up was Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, the work that traumatized Geoffrey Rush in “Shine.” Russian-born pianist Olga Kern was the featured soloist. As far as I know, she’s never had any psychic damage playing Rocky’s Third.
Copland’s “Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes” contains some of his best-known music. “Hoedown” was a prog-rock hit for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. In the early 1990s, it was used to underscore beef commercials.
