Concerns have grown over who will cover the cost of utilities and services at a warehouse the federal government plans to convert into an ICE detention facility
Concerns have grown over who will cover the cost of utilities and services at a warehouse the federal government plans to convert into an ICE detention facility, after Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall voiced opposition.
The warehouse location is west of the airport at 6020 West 300 South. The property is in an area overseen by the Utah Inland Port Authority, but they said it ultimately falls to the city to work out utilities and what can go there. "When you're dealing with the federal entity, a lot of times they do not have to abide by state and local regulations," said Ben Hart, executive director of the Utah Inland Port Authority. When the mayor of Salt Lake City got wind of the sale of this warehouse for an ICE detention facility, she sent DHS this letter on Tuesday, saying the city didn't support it. The letter says the building is not meant for human habitation, and the area's utility system couldn't handle it either."And it's something that we're concerned with as a community. We already don't have enough police," said Liddy Huntsman Hernandez, who is a former Salt Lake City Council candidate and a board member of the Salt Lake City Police Foundation. "I'm more concerned that this is battling the line of an unfunded mandate where the state will be for the city and for us to pay for it when we are not in favor of it." The mayor's letter also said they were expecting engagement with DHS on this facility, which they haven't gotten. "In terms of public hearings or zoning actions or anything like that, I don't know that there will be any," Hart said. We'll have to see ultimately what the authority of the federal government is versus what the authority of the city is." The mayor also says since the building is now federally owned, they're exempt from local taxes — meaning a local loss of more than a million dollars per year in property taxes. She's asking for a meeting to be set with DHS about this by the 27th.Fire crews with the South Salt Lake Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Islamic Center.Terry Addison, the fire chief with South Salt Lake FireThe Utah Department of Transportation was scheduled to begin an expansion project on Legacy Parkway through Davis County as soon as next week.Once completed, tFamily members of Eric Richins expressed relief after a verdict was delivered in the trial of Kouri Richins, the Utah woman now found guilty in connection withFollowing a weeks-long trial, Kouri Richins was found guilty of murdering her husband, Eric Richins. The 35-year-old Utah mother of three was accused of poisoninAn unsealed search warrant revealed new information related to Kouri Richins’ mom, Lisa Darden, which suggested that she could have played a part in planning an
