7NEWS: Bus on fire on Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge forces road closures outbound, traffic chaos on West Gate Freeway
Fire Rescue Victoria was called toWATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Bus on fire on Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge.The blaze, which is understood to have broken out in the engine bay of a diesel-powered public transport passenger bus, was extinguished by 6.20pm.
The bus driver, the only person on the vehicle at the time of the emergency, was able to evacuate unharmed.A bus has burst into flames on Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge.Victoria Police were earlier sent to the scene to direct traffic, with delays expected and motorists warned they should find alternative routes.
The emergency closed all outbound lanes of the West Gate Freeway, with heavy traffic stretching back into the Domain Tunnel. Motorists were told to avoid entering the West Gate Freeway and instead look for alternatives such as Footscray Rd into Footscray and returning to the freeway using Williamstown Rd, Millers Rd or Geelong Rd.Another option is CityLink, the Calder Freeway and the M80 Ring Rd.
Surrounding roads through Southbank, South Melbourne and Port Melbourne are congested leading onto the West Gate Freeway.The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but it is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.
