A GoFundMe is raising money in support of a 79-year-old doorman who was attacked in the lobby of an Upper West Side apartment building on March 8.
Neighbors came together Tuesday night for their 79-year-old doorman who was attacked in their Upper West Side building's lobby over a week ago. For 20 years, he has served the residents of the apartment building.
He made sure the brass was always polished on West 88th Street and Broadway. They called him "George." An easy nickname. His family asked Eyewitness News to keep his Romanian name private. Most recently, the 79-year-old doorman worked the overnight shift so tenants could sleep in peace, but then his peace was shattered. "He was really a beautiful person, kind," said resident Ronnie Taylor. "And we all loved him. And when he started to slow down, he became a late-night worker here who kept everybody safe."Eyewitness News was told that George told an outside guest he could not visit a specific apartment as per the tenant's wish. When George tried to find refuge in a stairwell, it appeared the man followed. Police believe the attack escalated behind the door. "I'm thinking about George here. He's a wonderful, wonderful person. He's a hard worker. We love him in the building, and you know, we just hope he gets better as soon as possible," said resident Justin Koplin. After five days in the hospital, George is now recovering at home, but he is not alone. Residents not only visited him in the hospital, they have organized a GoFundMe to help him with expenses. The fundraiser is asking for $7,000, which they have almost reached.Have a breaking news tip or an idea for a story we should cover?
