A pitbull was found on the side of Henderson Camp Road on March 1, 2025, inside a trash bag. His eyes and skin were red. The dog, named Chance, had to be put down because of multiple injuries, including a fractured skull.
Investigators say a bullet was lodged in his brain. He also suffered from mange and other conditions.Over a year later, people gathered at Grand Bay Middle School on March 30 to honor Chance and take the “Chance Legacy Pledge,” a commitment to help ensure no animal in Mobile County feels forgotten again. The event was hosted by Reach Out for Animal Rights, a nonprofit working to improve animal welfare in the region. The group formed after Chance’s story. Brooke Whitehurst, who took the pitbull to a local vet and gave him his name, said the memorial is about more than remembering one dog. “This is something that is continuing to happen, and no matter the laws that we put in place, if we don’t have community members who want to step up and speak up, then these things will continue to happen,” Whitehurst said. Last year, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the case. While nobody has been charged in connection with Chance’s death, Sheriff Paul Burch says it remains an open investigation.During the memorial, organizers also discussed two bills moving through the Alabama Legislature aimed at protecting animals. One would create basic statewide standards for dogs kept outdoors.“Animals can’t defend themselves. Someone who will intentionally abuse an animal will probably be abusive to a person as well,” Burch said. As people push for legal change, attendees held candles in a quiet moment of remembrance, honoring Chance and the impact his story has had on the community. Burch says he’s seen cases like Chance’s, and he’s hopeful the laws will become tougher for people who abandon and abuse animals.
