For 33 years, Gail Royal fed Montgomery. Now, the community is returning the favor.
Gail’s Down the Street Cafe, a meat-and-three lunch spot on Zelda Road, has been a Montgomery institution since 1993. But the beloved restaurant and its owner are facing one of their toughest battles yet.
In 2025, Royal was diagnosed with breast cancer. She pushed through her diagnosis and chemotherapy treatments while continuing to show up to work. Since April, however, she has been in and out of the hospital battling the cancer and related infections, leaving her unable to return to the restaurant she built.
“Gail has always been a hard worker,” said General Manager Russell Terry. “And Gail will tell you this; she’s pretty stubborn. ” Royal’s absence took a financial toll on the cafe. With the owner sidelined, the restaurant began to struggle.
As word spread about Royal’s condition, uncertainty grew among the cafe’s loyal customer base.
“I think people were a little afraid Gail isn’t going to be here and the food isn’t going to be the same,” Terry said. Last week, Terry took to Facebook with a simple message: show up, and the cafe would stay open.
“If you can provide the business, we’ll provide the food and service and we will stay open,” he said. “Monday was a tremendous day. Tuesday was a better day,” Terry said.
“We had a group from Alabaster come down, a group from Pelham came down. ”Royal has heard about the outpouring of support. The community Gail Royal served for 33 years is now showing up for her and her employees say they are not giving up hope.
“We want to give her something to come back to when she is fortunate enough to get out of the hospital,” Terry said. “And she will. She’s a fighter. ” Terry says as long as the restaurant keeps receiving community support, they will be able to stay open.
