A recent ICE raid on Cilantro Taqueria in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, has ignited a wave of activism and calls for action from local officials. Community members are demanding protections against further ICE raids and expressing their concerns about the impact of federal immigration policies on their lives.

The recent ICE raid on Cilantro Taqueria in Cleveland Heights , Ohio, has sparked a wave of fear and anger within the local community. Six employees were reportedly detained during the raid, prompting local activists and residents to demand action from city officials. While some argue that ICE is simply enforcing the law, others emphasize the unjust nature of mass deportation.

Ohio Senator Jerry Cirino (R-Kirtland) stated during President Trump's first week in office that federal agents are merely upholding the law, highlighting the complexities surrounding immigration policy. Concerned citizens organized a Rapid Response Community Meeting at a Cleveland Heights bookstore, aiming to address the community's anxieties and channel their emotions into constructive action. Dozens attended the meeting, which included information sessions on navigating encounters with ICE agents, as well as creating pamphlets and fliers to distribute throughout the area. Tahm Lytle, a member of the Cleveland Chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), played a key role in organizing the event. She emphasized the importance of unity and empowerment, urging community members to recognize their rights and resist the tactics of fear mongering often employed by authorities. The meeting also served as a platform for residents to voice their concerns and demands to the Cleveland Heights City Council. Several speakers urged the council to take concrete steps to protect their community from further ICE raids, including drafting legislation prohibiting local law enforcement from assisting federal immigration agents. They also called for measures to ensure ICE's restricted access to sensitive areas like schools, particularly in light of President Trump's recent removal of limitations on 'sensitive areas.' Mayor Khalil Seren acknowledged the community's concerns but stated that the city had not received any official information from federal authorities regarding the Cilantro Taqueria raid. He also referenced a previous proposal he introduced as a council member to prevent Cleveland Heights Police from detaining individuals for civil immigration law violations, a proposal that was ultimately not acted upon.
